HEADACHES -
Headaches are common in pregnancy. For relief try rest, drink plenty of fluids,
and try Tylenol (acetomenophen). It is also acceptable to try a small amount of
caffeine, such as a small glass of soda. If your headache persists, should you
experience visual changes or numbness, or if your doctor has told you that you
are at risk for preeclampsia, you should contact us.
COMMON COLD -
You should rest and drink plenty of fluids. Tylenol (acetomenophen)
may be helpful if you have a low grade fever. Hard candies are often helpful for
a sore throat. Over the counter Robitussin (guaifenesin) is acceptable for coughs.
For severe nasal congestion, pseudoephedrine may be used.
SEASONAL ALLERGIES -
Claritin (loratadine) is an over the counter medicine
and is safe in pregnancy.
NAUSEA AND VOMITING -
Start with a lot of rest. Try increasing your
fluid intake with whatever fluids seem to stay down. Try bottled water, flat soda,
or dilute fruit juice. Often high protein foods are better because you will have
a more stable blood sugar (try eggs, peanut butter, cheese, nuts, meat or fish).
Try to avoid being hungry. Try to avoid strong smells such as cooking or perfumes.
Over the counter medicines that may be helpful include Unisom (doxylamine) 50
milligrams at bedtime, and vitamin B6 25 milligrams every 4 hours. Sea bands are
wrist bands that work by putting pressure on acupressure sites. They are available
at most drug stores.
